I tried out one of the hottest new kids’ games this holiday season, the Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time game. I played it with my family and did a thorough review so you’ll know if this Sofia the First game is a good present for your kids. Review: Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time Game
Disney’s Sofia the First Magical Tea Time game is designed for preschool and older kids aged 3 years old and up. It doesn’t have small pieces that are a choking hazard for young children. The cardboard game pieces are heavy weight and durable. The tea cups with rollers inside and teapot air puffer are not only game pieces, but toys also!
The packaging had a drawback in that the tea cups are secured in a cardboard rack that is very tight. It was quite difficult to remove the cups from the package. When I removed the tea cups, they popped out with force in a way that could be dangerous if they hit someone. Use caution when removing and make sure an adult removes the cups from the package.
My Family Playing the Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time Game
Below is the video of me unboxing the Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time game, showing the pieces, and even has video of my family playing the game and using the tea pot air puffer and tea cups.
Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time Game: The Good
Fun Tea Party Treats Pieces: The cardboard treats are all kinds of pretty desserts of different colors, shapes and designs.
New Hot Disney Character: This game features one of Disney Junior’s hottest new stars of their animated shows, Princess Sofia the First.
Squeezy Tea Pot Air Puffer: The tea pot air puffer is a hollow flexible toy that is squeezed to shoot out air at the tea cups. This teapot was one of the kids’ favorite pieces!
Spinning Tea Cups: The spinning tea cups have a rolling center which turns to show different colors inside the drink. They also make a fun sound when they spin.
Game Pieces Double as Toys: My kids will definitely be using the pieces out of this game to play tea party with their toys, even when we’re not playing the Magical Tea Time game! The treats, plates, place mats, teapot, and tea cups can all double as toys for regular play.
Tea Party Set Up: The tea party setup of the plates and place mats makes the game play look like a real princess tea party.
Great Price: The price of this game compared to a a premium toy tea party set is unbelievably reasonable. After seeing and using the game pieces, I was surprised that the game was priced so low.
Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time Game: The Bad
Confusing Game Play: Even though the game is safe for ages 3 and up, the game play was too confusing for my kids to follow. Even I had to keep referring to the instructions to see what steps we were to take when certain treat game pieces were turned over. One confusing instruction was to use the tea pot to spin your own cup, then spin the cups of all other players before running out of treats.
Teapot Too Hard to Use: The tea pot’s spout hole is too small to blow enough air for the game play. As you could see in the video, it was almost impossible for my kids (even my 6 year old) to use the teapot correctly to complete their turns.
Tea Cups too Hard to Spin: Blowing on the tea cups was fun but difficult for my younger children. If you don’t blow on them at exactly the right angle, the insides won’t spin.
Too Many Options on Back of Treats: There were more options available on the back of the treats than my kids could remember what to do with.
Competitive Play: This game is a player versus player game, so all family members are competing against each other for a win instead of working as a team. For preschool aged children, this isn’t always the best arrangement.
4 Player Max: There are only 4 placemats and 4 tea cups, so no more than 4 people can play the game at a time. This could be a negative if you wanted to play it at a slumber party or birthday party, since there is no way to modify the game by adding extra game pieces.
Not Enough Sofia in the Game: We wanted to see more Sofia! Princess Sofia was only in the actual game in one place that I saw, and she never came up when we played the game. She is prominent on the game packaging but should have more visibility in the actual game.
Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time Game: Take It or Leave It
Take It: The Disney Sofia the First Magical Tea Time game is a must buy, not necessarily because of the game play, but because the tea set pieces are sublime. I can’t think of any toy tea set I have ever seen that has had tea cups as cool as the spinning tea cups. The insides spin and change color and you couldn’t buy a set like that separate from this game.
The teapot is another rare treasure, because that squeezy air puffer tea pot is going to be the coolest tea party accessory you can find for girls. Even if girls can’t play this game with a whole slumber party, they will all definitely be fighting over who gets to have the cups and tea pot when they play tea party with their stuffed animals! You’ll probably want to buy 2 boxes of the Magical Tea Time game so you can have a bigger tea party set, and that could fix the group party problem as well.
Your kids can even use the plates and place mats to play with when you’re not playing the game. I honestly don’t think my girls will ever bring the tea party pieces back to the game box from their toys because they love them so much!
